President Belury and the new Board Members will work together on a new set of presidential priorities to further the goals of ASN 2028
Rockville, MD—July 1, 2022 – The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) welcomes Martha Belury, PhD, RD, as President for the 2022-2023 year, as well as new members of the ASN Board of Directors. These accomplished professionals will lead ASN in advancing the science, education, and practice of nutrition and carrying out ASN’s long term strategic plan, ASN 2028, as the society approaches its 100th anniversary.
“We are proud to have Dr. Belury as our new leader, building on our Past Presidents’ successes and fostering the growth of emerging leaders in nutrition science,” said John Courtney, PhD, ASN’s Chief Executive Officer. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help ASN continue to grow and thrive.”
Martha Belury, PhD, RD, begins her term as President on July 1, 2022, taking over for Paul M. Coates, PhD, who remains on ASN’s Board of Directors as Past President. Dr. Belury is the Carol S. Kennedy Professor and Program Chair of Human Nutrition at The Ohio State University. Her specialty is conducting translational research on dietary components that impact skeletal and cardiac muscles and energy metabolism. Dr. Belury’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications, and she also interprets research findings to non-scientists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals. She has been a member of ASN since 1989, serving as Vice President and Nutritional Sciences Council Chair. In 2014, ASN awarded her the Robert H. Herman Memorial Award for Outstanding Research. She is an Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
“ASN President Dr. Paul Coates and Past President Dr. Lindsay Allen have provided outstanding role modeling and leadership to ASN members and to me,” said Dr. Belury. “Our society leaders work hard with passion and dedication, and I’m honored to continue their legacy in our vision for a healthier world through evidence-based nutrition.”
Dr. Belury outlined her priorities for the next year during ASN’s annual business meeting, held in conjunction with its annual meeting, NUTRITION 2022 LIVE ONLINE. Dr. Belury’s agenda centers around growth in membership and partnerships while ensuring public trust in nutrition science. Her priorities include expanding resources for under-represented scholars and expanding partnerships with industry, government, and other professional societies in order to increase funding for and investment in nutrition research. Plans also include working with ASN members to provide educational tools for the public in order to increase trust and transparency in science. Dr. Belury’s plans to engage with members and the nutrition science community around the world will continue ASN’s progress towards a healthier world through evidence-based nutrition while protecting, sustaining, and enhancing resources for the future.
